Film&TV Language: Poster Analysis
Harrison Ford Blade Runner
1) What do you think the film is about and what might the story line be?
The black and blue on the poster suggest that the film is a sci-fi film. The bright lights and the oranges also suggest the film may be an action movie. The gun suggests violence which means there may be a battle. The skyscraper buildings suggests the film take place in the centre of a highly populated city, possibly suggesting that there will be a large number of people affected by the dangers in this film. The idea of the film being a sci-fi suggests to me that there will be unknown species attacking innocent civilians in order to take control. The tag line backs up the idea that the film will be about violence as it suggests man is left to fight its battles alone.
2) What genre do you think the film belongs to?
I think the genre of the film is a sci-fi/ action movie. The visible weapons on the top right of the poster suggests violence. The illuminating yellows and oranges suggest that it may be an action movie as these colours are often associated with this genre of film. The blues, blacks and whites give of a sci-fi feeling. These colours give us the idea that the film will be full of unknown dangerous creatures to man. The gadgets at the centre of the poster are almost what draws us in. Straight away we can see unusual looking gadgets illuminated, this is what mainly tells us that this film may be a sci-fi.
3) Who do you think is the target audience?
I think the target audience will be around 18-30. This is because the gun connotes violence also the cigarette suggests the film will contain content inappropriate for young children. I don't think young teens(16-18) will be attracted to the film as the actors look quite old and the film appears to be an old film due to the pictures. This may push away a younger audience as they may be more interested in newly released films.
Scary Movie 2
1) What do you think the film is about?
The mixed emotions of the actors on the front suggest to me that the film will be a comedy/horror. The darkness of the poster has connotations of the unknown and fear. The pop of red connotes death, blood and fear. The actors don't look completely look serious suggesting they are mocking a horror. The tag line also suggests the film is going to be a comedy as the words "absolutely hilarious" are boldly placed across the top of the poster.
2) What genre do you think the film belongs to?
I believe the film will be a comedy/horror. This is because of the title and cover line of the film both suggest different genres. The red and black suggest the film will be a horror as the have connotations of fear and death. The false expressions of the 6 actors suggest the whole film isn't going to be serious and the whole film will be filled with jokes.
3) Who do you think the target audience is?
I think the target audience will be 15-25. This is because many of the actors on the cover appear in other popular films. For example Marlon Wayans and Anna Faris. The genre of the film is also highly popular with a younger audience. Most of the actors appear to be quite young and childish suggesting that a younger group of people will be able to relate to the actors easier.

1) What do you think the film is about?
The smoke and dull scenery suggests that the film is about a negative matter. The film may be about someone trying to leave or escape their country, this is because the character is looking over the river looking at a group of boats. Boats connote travelling and movement which suggests the character wants to either travel or move. The snow and bare trees suggest that the film is during the winter period. The smoke in the distant suggests large factory work, which may be what the character is escaping from.
2) What genre do you think the film belongs to?
I think the film is a drama. This is because the poster has a lot of negative aspects. The characters posture suggests hes upset, tired and possibly weak. This means he may be having a conflict with himself or even the nature around him. Also the grey and black sky suggests darkness causing the whole feel of the poster to be dark and negative. The smoke in the background is also another big negative. Smoke pollutes and almost suffocates the air. This suggests that the character may feel suffocated either by himself or others.
3) Who do you think the target audience is?
I think the target audience will be 20+. This is because the film appears to be quite old and based on subjects that may not be of interest to a younger audience. The actor on the cover appears to be 30+ and his appearance is rough. The older film audience is likely to be able to relate to the issues covered as they will be closer to the actors ages meaning they may have experienced similar situations.
I'm Not Scared
1) What do you think the film is about?
From looking at the cover I have a feeling that the film is aimed towards a younger audience. From the title and cover picture I believe that the film will be based around a young boy facing his fears or being brave in order to help others. His facial expressions clearly show he's feeling scared or unsure on whatever lies inside the hole/ditch that he is staring into. The darkness inside the hole compared to the brightness of the sky suggests what lies beneath is a dark or possibly a secret.
2) What genre do you think the film belongs to?
The film poster states that the film is a thriller. However if it didn't state this I would guess it was a thriller due to the darkness(black) of the bottom half of the poster and the brightness of the top(blue). Both blue and black are typical colour conventions of thriller film posters. Also the title is often in a bold sans serif font so it stands out to the audience and draws the attention towards that focal point.
3) Who do you think the target audience is?
I think the target audience would be around 15-25 year olds. This is because the cover appears to be quite acceptable for "young" people. However the title suggests it won't be acceptable for minors(under 15s) as it may contain content which is inappropriate for young children. I wouldn't say it appears to be suited to an older audience(30+) this is because the actor appears quite young and generally an older age group show more interest in romantic movies for example.
Sin City
1) What do you think the film is about?
I think the film may be about a group of investigators or detectives solving a mystery or a crime. This is because of the way the actors on the poster are dressed. They all appear to be wearing long black leather coats and they all appear to be very serious. The weapons suggest that there is going to be violence typically between a hero and a villain. The darkness of the poster with bright red writing suggests there may be blood and even deaths throughout the film. The font appears quite Gothic suggesting the film will contain content or a dark nature.
2) What genre do you think the film belongs to?
I think the genre of the film is either crime or thriller. This is because the film poster looks quite mysterious as it makes us ask a lot of questions. The long black leather coats are often associated with investigation movies/stories. The weapons also suggest that the film genre may be crime as they are also associated with cop/investigation shows.
3) Who do you think the target audience is?
I think that the target audience is 18+. This is because the cover suggests that it is a violent film which may contain swearing. The darkness of the poster may reflect the story line suggesting that the film will be quite dark. The bold red title connotes blood which also connotes death and violence. These graphic scenes may not be suitable for under 18s as they may be quite disturbing.
Pirates Of The Caribbean Dead Mans Chest
1) What do you think the film is about?
From the title I can already tell the film will be based around pirates. The darkness of the poster suggests death or violence. The characters appear to be very serious. This suggests that the film may be extremely tense. The large ship reinforces the idea of pirates as they travel in boats/ships. The title also suggests that violence may be involved as the word 'dead' has been used.
2) What genre do you think the film belongs to?
I think the film is either an action/adventure film. This is because typically in pirate films the main story line is kind of an adventure to reach a goal. The violence and weapons which come alongside typical pirate films suggest that the film could also be an action movie.
3) Who do you think the target audience is?
I think the target audience is 15-25. This is because most action and adventure movies appeal to young people as they are at a point in life where they themselves are looking to go on adventures(travelling and trips etc) of their own. The violence doesn't appear to be too extreme as their isn't really signs of it on the poster which is why I don't think the film will be an 18+.
Bride And Prejudice
1) What do you think the film is about?
From the title I can tell that a wedding will take place at some point throughout the movie. The brightness of the poster suggest that the film is positive, happy and upbeat. The actors all appear to be celebrating which means an important event takes centre stage in the film(a wedding).
2) What genre do you think the film belongs to?
The tag line suggests that the film is a romantic comedy. The focus picture of the poster shows love between two people reinforcing the idea that its a romantic movie. The title of the movie also connotes love and romance.
3) Who do you think the target audience is?
I think the target audience will be 16-25 year olds. This is because a lot of comedy films are targeted at a teen audience as they show most interest in them. The film poster is very colourful and suggests the film will bed very upbeat. This means an older audience may struggle to keep up with the pace of the film.
Million Dollar Baby
1) What do you think the film is about?
From looking at the poster I think the film will have something to do with a sporting competition. I can infer this because of the costumes the actors are wearing. Their facial expressions are quite serious which creates s sense of tension suggesting there is a battle/competition. The black also intensifies the tension.
2) What genre do you think the film belongs to?
Because I think the films story line is based around a sporting competition I think the genre will be sports. The intensity of the whole poster and the costumes and makeup suggest this.
3) Who do you think the target audience is?
I think the target audience will be 17-27 year olds. This is because I think a younger audience will be able to relate to a sporting competition story line better that an older group of people. Also I believe a younger audience will show more interest in it as the actors appear to be in a younger age category.
